Reaper does support AU plugins. It has for as long as I’ve been using it on a Mac. But it does not support that very special breed of AU plugin that outputs MIDI. This seems to be something only a handful of hosts support.
I don’t think it makes much difference, although I recall VST3 having some issues with outputing MIDI CC messages, although this may have been fixed.
