My plugins crash (Win 11/Ableton 12)

Hi,

I developed a plugin with Cabbage a few months ago and did a lot of testing (Win10, 11, MacOS, FL Studio, Ableton, …) and it worked well.

However, I am not able to open the plugin on Ableton 12 / Win 11, Live instantly crashes.

I tried:

  • Ableton 11 / Win 11 and MacOS: no issues
  • Audacity / Win 11: no issues
  • Ableton 12 / Win 11: instant crash

Did you also experience this issue with Cabbage plugins in Ableton 12? The crash report does not provide any useful information…

Thank you very much for your help!

Best,

Julien

I tried exporting the default Cabbage effect and Ableton does not crash. However here is how it looks like:

It looks like there is a UI issue, but it does not crash…

Now if I load the plugin in the same session (with the default plugin), it works!

So I tried to close Ableton and reopen an empty session, and it works again… My issue is that some of my users experience the issue so I need to find the underlying cause.

In order to export the VST3 of the template effect I had to install Cabbage on my testing machine. So it means I also installed csound, maybe that’s why the bug disappeared? But then why the « statically link » embedded Csound wouldn’t work in Ableton Live but would work in Audacity?

I’m not sure this investigation helps but if you have any other debug ideas, I’m happy to try to find the cause of the bug

Hi @nymano, I’ve no idea what might be causing this. Nothing has changed in terms of Csound or Cabbage that much in the last year or so. It’s likely something that changed in Live. There is a thread about it on the JUCE forum:

This was resolved by updating toe JUCE 8, which I don’t have a license for.
I won’t have access to a Windows machine until tomorrow, have you test with Live 12 on MacOS?

out of curiosity, can you try enabled openGL? In your form widget declaration, add openGL(1)

Thanks Rory, I will try these tests (Live 12 on MacOS and enabling openGL).

However, the plugin works fine when I install Cabbage on the machine… Which makes me think that the csound install solves the issue. I will try to uninstall csound and see if it still works.

Interesting point: when I first loaded the plugin Live asked if I wanted to install “DirectLive”, and then re-started, then crashed when I opened the plugin again.

A friend tested on MacOS / Live 12 (I bought Live 10 and never updated): it works perfectly

Did you install your own pro version of Cabbage, or a beta build?

A beta build downloaded on Cabbage website.

And the plugin causing the crash was exported using my own pro version of Cabbage.

What version are you running in your pro build? I can trigger a new build if you’re not up to date.

2.9.231, Licensed to Nymano Audio

Do you think it would solve the issue? I will investigate on my end.

I really can’t understand what’s happening, to summarize:

  • I rented a fresh Win 11 VM online
  • I installed ableton live 12 and my plugin (exported with Pro Cabbage)
  • Plugin works well in audacity, and makes ableton crash after ableton asks to install “DirectLive” and restarts
  • I install Cabbage on this machine
  • I export the template effect
  • I can load the effect in Live but there are UI issues
  • I can then load my plugin and the UI works well!

I’ll start a new build here, if we’re lucky this will solve everything and get off easy! :crossed_fingers:
